La section européenne à Ravel expliquée par les élèves

DNL

DNL is Biology in English, it means discipline non-linguistique. We study the same content as in French, so you have the same teacher for DNL and SVT français.
For example, we studied the Earth and the Universe or the human body and health, during the first year.
Obviously, it’s a real advantage to see the topics twice. This way it consolidates the different things we have learnt in French because the texts in English are easier to understand.
It’s practical to learn biology in a small group. This way the teacher can spend more time with you to explain the things you haven’t understood.

LAB

The lab is a newly created room with modern computers and microphones.

We can prepare presentations or use the Internet to do some research.

For example when we have to do presentations we surf the web to find information about the topic of our presentation.

There are many software like audacity to record ourselves and it helps us to improve our accent. If we make mistakes, we can remove the files and try again. This allows us to correct our mistakes.

We can also use Power Point to add images to our presentation.

Trip to London

When we learnt we were going to London, we knew that we’d have to do some extra work in order to earn money. In doing so we got to meet the “seconds” and become friends. We had to split in groups when we packed Christmas presents, when we were serving food and drinks at a car-boot sale or when we sold cakes in the school hallway during the breaks.

The bus trip was very funny: we had a lot of fun. It was long but it didn’t feel like it, since we were with our friends.

What was great is that we stayed with host families. It allowed us to fully use our English since we were in some kind of “immersion” in the British Community. Communicating with them made us learn about their culture, as well as tasting their unlikely food.

The whole trip was amazing. We got to discover the city of London. We saw many famous places such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Piccadilly Circus…

Luckily, the weather was great and it allowed us to fully enjoy the trip.

We also had a lot of free time so that we could walk around the city and go shopping.

This trip brought us amazing memories and allowed us to meet many people, to learn about the culture of British people, but also to build new friendships. But most of all, it allowed us to use our knowledge.

If you’re interested in improving your English and your scientific knowledge,

this section is for you!

What are the criteria to integrate the European section?

To integrate the European section, you have to be interested in science, especially in biology.

But you also have to be motivated to improve your English language and scientific knowledge.

To improve your English and your communication skills you will have the opportunity to practice with a native (with an assistant for example: each year, an English or American student comes to work with small groups of students or in the class.)

Interview with the English assistant

What’s your name?
My name is Charlotte Vivienne Esperanza Pape.

Where are you from?
I’m from a little town near Dover, UK.

Why did you decide to leave your country and come to France?
I study French so I have to spend a year in a French speaking country: it’s compulsory to come to a French speaking country for 7 months. I’m here to improve my oral skills, to see new places and meet new people.

Why did you make the decision/choice to come to this region?
I live in the South of England, consequently I have been to the North of France a lot so North didn’t attract me. I can go there whenever I want since it’s near my town. I’ve already been to the East of France in the past so I thought I could now discover the Basque coast. Moreover, I like the beach and mountains. This region is very varied.

What are the differences between the UK’s school system and the French one?
There are many differences but I’m going to focus on the main ones. First of all, in England we don’t have European sections, if we want to study a language we have to choose it as a subject. Indeed, we only have 3 or 4 subjects needed to pass our final year exams. However, we have to get a certain mark in each of these subjects in order to pass which is not the case in France: some great marks can compensate the bad ones.
Also, in England, school days are from 9 am to 15:30 pm whereas in France they are much longer.

What do you do during your free time?
I play sports such as cricket. I also like going out, travelling, visiting places, and meeting new people.

What sport do you practice?
I play cricket in summer and hockey in winter.

Which football team do you support?
I support Chelsea, one of the many London teams and my favourite player is Frank Lampard.

What kind of music do you like? And what’s your favourite film?
I like most kinds of music apart from heavy metal.  My favourite band is Muse. I’ve seen them four times. My favourite album is “Absolution”. My favourite film is “In Bruges”.
If you had an unlimited amount of money what would you do of it first?
I would pay off my student loan, give some money to my parents and of course travel all around the world.

Do you travel a lot? If you do, where have you been?
Yes, I try to travel each year with my parents. I went to Australia, Perth, South Africa and Abu Dhabi to play cricket. I went to the Philippines when I was 3 years old because my mother is a native from there. I have travelled a lot in Europe: France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland, Greece and Cyprus.

Which country did you prefer?
My all-time favourite was Australia. There are nice beaches, the weather is great and so is the food. However, the main reason I loved the country is because I got to attend a competition called “the Ashes”. It’s a cricket competition between England and Australia that takes place every 18 months.

What is something you would love to try but you are too scared to actually do it?
I think that if I wanted to get a tattoo, I would be too scared to actually get it. I would really love to try skydiving, although it’s scary.

So now that you got to spend time with us, what are your impressions about French people?
French people are really relaxed, especially on rules about alcohol. It’s also true that you’re eating a lot of bread, and that young people smoke a lot. I like the fact that there is the beach and that you don’t need a passport to go to Spain. In this school people have a good level of English and that allows me to talk about more interesting topics with the students.

What do you like about French culture?
I love bakeries! In England, we can’t find shops selling only bread or cakes, we need to buy them at the supermarket. Here, pastries are delicious, I enjoy the local specialities.  I also like people’s behaviour, you are very relaxed!

If this trip wasn’t compulsory would you have come to France anyway?
Yes, because it’s a rewarding experience and it’s useful to improve my French.

Will you come back here once you’re back in the UK?
I probably will. I am sure that I’m going to come back to France since I live close to Calais. I might come back to this region for the famous “Fêtes de Bayonne”. Moreover, I want a job that helps me to travel a lot and speaking French is really useful. I want to use my knowledge in the future.

2019-2020               1ère 2: section européenne

Read the interview with the Welsh assistant Emilie Potts:
 January 2020

How did you spend your Christmas holiday?
I spent Christmas in France for the first time, with my family in Bordeaux. For me, it was my favourite Christmas because I got to eat lobster for the first time, and I spent it with my grandparents which was so nice. Also, I found Christmas to be less commercial in France, than in the UK. I found Christmastime to be more relaxing in here.
What have you studied?
I have studied English Literature at Cardiff University and I really loved it. I was lucky enough to go to a good university which had great lecturers and courses.
Is it part of the university course to be an assistant?
No, to be an English assistant you just need to be a first language English speaker.
How is your experience so far as an assistant?
My experience has been great so far. I have learned a lot and I have really enjoyed working with the students from lycée Maurice Ravel because the students have a really good level of English. I can discuss complex subjects. I also like to see how each class react to the discussions we have. I’ve learned that every group is different. It has been a very fulfilling experience.
Do you love the Basque country?
I love Basque culture because I find it similar to Celtic culture. I love the food and the region is so beautiful. I really like being close to the mountains and the sea because I find it so refreshing and it reminds me of home.
How many countries have you visited so far?
I have visited, Ireland, England, Spain, France, Portugal, Switzerland and Denmark (Copenhagen).
What is the next country you want to travel to? And with who?
I would like to travel to Italy with my boyfriend Jack. My grandfather comes from a little place called Trieste, so I would love to visit it.
What’s your favourite place in the world for you?
For me, either the Basque country or Bordeaux. I feel more at home in Bordeaux. The Basque country is new to me, but I feel comfortable here and I haven’t found anything that I don’t like yet.
What is your favourite book?
My favourite book is ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde.
What is your favourite film?
My favourite film is ‘Thelma and Louise’. I love the story and I never get tired of watching it.
Who is your favourite actor/actress?
It is Al Pacino and Elizabeth Moss.
What are your hobbies?
I like to run because I have a lot of energy. I love music and I love going to the theater. Something that I miss about the UK is going to the theatre. A big part of my social life at home was going to watch a band with my friends. I miss that a little.
What is your favourite French food?
I love foie gras and moules marinières.
Do you feel like French people’s mentality is different from Welsh people’s mentality?
Very different, I find people here are more relaxed. Also, the young people are a lot more independent than the young people in the UK in general.
Have you found it difficult to settle in France?
I found settling in difficult for around 3 or 4 weeks. At first, it was difficult with the language and it was hard to communicate. I felt alone but this helped me with experiencing independence and freedom. It made me think about what I want.
Have you found some friends whilst being here?
I have some friends in Bayonne and I have many friends in Bordeaux too.
What are your resolutions this year?
I would like to take more photos, to think positively, to meet new people and make new connections. I also want to decide where to live in September and make decisions about my life.
What is your dream?
One thing that I would really love to see are The Northern Lights.

 Thank you !
